Study Ivy League Undergraduate Programs Online
This year, the job market for recent graduates in the United States is facing considerable pressure. Data shows that the unemployment rate for college graduates has climbed to 9.7% , and more and more employers are shifting to skills-based hiring, while the allure of academic qualifications is fading.
At the same time, universities themselves are experiencing increasingly frequent upheavals. The number of undergraduate students in the United States has continued to decline from its peak of 18.1 million in 2010, losing nearly 2 million students.
The consensus among many people today is that university is becoming less and less worthwhile.
In particular, the cost of private schools in the United States has become increasingly expensive, and the dropout rate is rising. "Dropout to start a business" has even become a hot topic in Silicon Valley . Companies are also beginning to demystify academic qualifications, skipping college and recruiting high school graduates directly.

Under such circumstances, the conventional path of "high school-university-employment" is also being disrupted.
Just recently, following the Ivy League school, the University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University has also launched a groundbreaking new program : in 2027, it will launch its first part-time, fully online undergraduate degree, the "Bachelor of Professional Studies" (BPS) , which integrates business, economics, policy and social sciences and is aimed at working adults who have some college credits but have not yet obtained an undergraduate degree.
In other words, whether students drop out to start a business or work, wish to change their major, or switch industries, they now have a more flexible path to a prestigious undergraduate degree.
More importantly, in the past, only public universities provided such programs for universal education, and these programs were concentrated at the graduate level. Now, prestigious private universities are also taking the initiative to open their doors and extend these programs to the undergraduate level, which sets a precedent.

1. University of Pennsylvania | Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS)
In 2019, Penn's School of Professional and Liberal Studies (Penn LPS Online) began enrolling online undergraduate students, marking the first fully online undergraduate degree in Ivy League history.
The target students are working adults who have not completed their undergraduate studies, and community college transfer students with some college credits are also welcome.
Specializations cover multiple fields such as data analysis, humanities and social sciences, and management, allowing students to freely choose their specializations based on their career goals.
The admission process is a bit unusual. You need to take four Gateway Program courses and achieve a GPA of 2.7 or higher, with no single course below a C , to be officially admitted . It's not a matter of applying first and then being admitted; it's more like a "performance-based admission" logic.
Tuition is $2,882 per course, about one-third lower than Penn's in-person programs. It offers federal financial aid but does not support student visas.
2. Harvard University | Bachelor of Arts (ALB)
Harvard's often-mentioned "online undergraduate" program is actually a hybrid program, not purely online . The vast majority of courses can be completed online, but eight credits must be taken at the Cambridge campus (which can be completed over two weekends).
You must have graduated from high school at least five years ago to apply for this program. It follows the "take classes first, then enroll" model. The first step is to register for three courses and get at least a B before you can submit a formal application.
Tuition is $2,160 per course, and graduation requires 128 credits, with a maximum of 64 credits transferable.
It's important to note that the final degree awarded is a Bachelor of Arts in Extension Studies from Harvard University, with the word "Extension" noted on the diploma. This means you receive a Harvard degree, but not a Harvard undergraduate degree.
The students are currently around 30 years old, have one or two years of university experience, and work full-time.
3. Cornell University | Bachelor of Professional Studies (BPS)
Cornell's new requirements now require applicants to have been out of high school for at least four years, have accumulated 45 to 60 transferable credits, and have a recommended GPA of 3.0, but can also consider their professional experience.
Most courses are conducted asynchronously, with optional live discussion sessions. Enrollment is available in either the fall or spring semester. Student visas are not supported, and international students must confirm their eligibility separately.
Tuition is $925 per credit hour, and need-based financial aid is available. Students are encouraged to apply for employer-sponsored tuition subsidies.
There are two noteworthy details regarding the graduation requirements: first, all students must complete a community-involved graduation project; second, they must submit a digital portfolio.
These two designs are quite different from the traditional "graduation by submitting a thesis" approach; they are more like tailor-made for the professional scenarios of working students.
The school will also partner with the Cornell Prison Education Program to open this degree to adult inmates at Cayuga Correctional Institution, which is quite meaningful.
While Ivy League universities are taking cautious steps toward online undergraduate education, several public universities have already successfully navigated this path, providing mature benchmarks in terms of scale, reputation, and cost-effectiveness.
4. Arizona State University (ASU Online)
This is the largest online program to date. Launched in 2006, ASU Online now has over 100,000 registered students and offers more than 350 fully online undergraduate and graduate programs.
There is no distinction between in-state and out-of-state students; tuition is calculated uniformly; diplomas do not indicate "online"; and the program shares faculty with in-person courses. In the 2026 U.S. News & World Report rankings of best online undergraduate programs, ASU ranked sixth nationally.
Tuition is approximately $6,000 to $8,000 per semester for undergraduate students (in-state students). Tuition is slightly higher for out-of-state students, but overall it is considered mid-to-low among public universities. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with multiple intake dates throughout the year, and the entry requirements are relatively lenient.
Its professional coverage is extremely broad, ranging from business, nursing, engineering, and education to communication and psychology, with almost no gaps. This is why it is a top choice for many people who are changing careers.
5. University of Arizona (Arizona Online)
Arizona State University is often compared to ASU, but they are quite different in style.
The school has made it clear that it will not charge additional out-of-state tuition fees, and tuition will be charged uniformly regardless of where students live, which is rare among public universities in the United States.
Arizona offers more than 200 undergraduate and graduate programs entirely online, covering fields such as information technology, nursing, public health, education, and business analytics.
Compared to ASU's emphasis on "scale and accessibility," the University of Arizona places more emphasis on academic depth, with some programs having a strong national reputation in their respective fields, such as nursing and public health.
Tuition is calculated per credit hour, starting at approximately $650 per credit hour for undergraduate programs. This is a serious option for students who know exactly what they want to study and want to find a balance between academic resources and online flexibility.
6. Penn State World Campus
This is a long-established online platform that has been operating since 1998, and is one of the oldest online education platforms in the United States. It now offers more than 200 certified online programs, from undergraduate to doctoral levels, with nearly 14,000 students enrolled.
Undergraduate tuition is not differentiated by state, and the full annual cost is approximately $15,356. The diploma also does not specify "online." This is important because Pennsylvania State University is a highly recognized public university among employers in the Midwest and Northeast of the United States. The absence of an "online" label on the diploma provides practical protection for students concerned about the value of their degree.
The programs covered include business, information technology, health sciences, nursing, criminology, and engineering, with information technology and business being the two with the most stable reputation.
Another unique advantage of Penn State is its well-established corporate partnership program, with over 250 companies offering tuition reimbursement. If your employer is on the list, you may not have to pay the tuition yourself.
7. University of Florida (UF Online)
This is a relatively cost-effective online project, especially for residents of Florida.
In the 2025-26 academic year, the total tuition for in-state students will be approximately $3,876 per academic year, which is practically a steal by US undergraduate standards; for out-of-state students, it will be $500 per credit, which is also relatively low for public universities.
UF itself is a top 5 public university in the US News rankings, with a strong academic reputation.
Nearly 70% of UF Online students graduate with zero debt, while students with loans have an average debt of about $16,000, far lower than the average of $32,000 for public universities in the United States. They use the same faculty and receive the same degree as students at in-person campuses.
The majors are mainly business, communication, criminology, health science, and psychology. While not comprehensive, they cover several fields with relatively stable demand in the job market.
UF Online students can also choose to purchase an optional fee package to access on-campus resources such as athletic facilities and wellness services. This adds a real campus feel to online learning for students living in Florida or who frequently travel to Gainesville.
By putting all these options together, we can roughly create a tiered structure based on our needs.
For those who value the prestige of a school's brand the most, there are currently only two Ivy League options: Penn's BAAS and Cornell's BPS, with tuition fees ranging from $2,000 to $3,000 per credit or per course.
The difference is that Penn has been running the program for seven years and has accumulated a certain reputation; Cornell will only admit its first batch of students in 2027, and it is currently untested.
For those requiring large-scale, highly flexible, and broad-based academic coverage, ASU Online can basically meet most needs, offering low entry requirements, multiple enrollment periods, and a comprehensive range of majors. The University of Arizona is a more academically oriented alternative.
For those whose primary goal is to control costs, UF Online is virtually an irreplaceable cost-effective option for Florida residents; Penn State World Campus offers a better balance between reputation and cost for students outside of Florida, with an annual fee of approximately $15,000, regardless of whether they are from Florida or not.
Harvard ALB is somewhat unique; it's not entirely online and requires completing a small number of in-person courses in Cambridge. However, if you can accept this arrangement and your budget allows, obtaining a "Harvard University" diploma is on a completely different level in terms of significance compared to other programs.
Having discussed these options, one question remains unanswered: how far can an online bachelor's degree actually go in the real job and further education market?
A 2025 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHR) found that 67% of employers considered online degrees from accredited institutions to be of equal value to in-person degrees. This shift was primarily driven by the widespread adoption of remote work following the pandemic, which substantially altered employers' perceptions of online education.
However, this 67% is an average, which masks the huge differences between industries.
In fields such as nursing, education, IT, and data analytics, online degrees are relatively more widely accepted; in fields such as finance and top consulting, school brand remains a selection variable that may not be explicitly stated but is nonetheless a real factor.
For working adults who would otherwise never have the opportunity to attend a top university, an online undergraduate degree from Cornell or Penn could be a truly transformative career opportunity.
For traditional applicants who already have the means to attend prestigious offline universities, this is not an alternative path.
The University of Pennsylvania's BAAS program has been running for nearly seven years, but systematic external follow-up research is still almost nonexistent. Cornell's first cohort of students will not enroll until 2027, and they will complete the five-year program and receive their degrees around 2032.
However, regardless of the circumstances, one undeniable trend is that higher education is undergoing a genuine structural upheaval.
For the past century, top universities have been pricing themselves on scarcity. The reason why degrees from prestigious universities are valuable is partly because they are extremely difficult to get into.
Nowadays, more and more universities are proactively opening up online undergraduate programs and actively negotiating tuition reimbursement with employers, working together to open that door a crack.
They began to redefine what they could offer, beyond just a diploma, such as a degree that can be completed while working, or a pathway to convert professional experience into academic credits, giving more and more people who want to receive a good education the opportunity.
