Nvidia engineers start with a base salary of $140,000 to $220,000, and with stock options, they can take home more than $250,000 a year (about 1.8 million RMB). And this is just the starting price.


Having read this, you're probably wondering: which American universities do these chip giants actually favor?

I recently came across a post where the author collected employee data from five top chip companies on LinkedIn.


The conclusion may overturn your understanding:


Choosing the right "school near the factory" is often more effective than desperately trying to get into an Ivy League school.


05 Apple


Apple's market capitalization has consistently ranked among the top in the world, and its product line is probably familiar to everyone: iPhone, Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch. Apple's headquarters are located in Cupertino, California, in the famous Apple Park.

Regarding its self-developed chips, Apple Silicon began replacing Intel in 2020, and now the M-series chips have been deployed in Macs and iPad Pros. In February of this year, Apple also released its first self-developed 5G modem, the C1, gradually reducing its dependence on Qualcomm.


In terms of employees, there are approximately 180,000 worldwide, with half (about 90,000) in the United States, including about 40,000 engineers. Among these US chip giants, Apple has the largest number of engineers.


Compared to other chip giants, Apple's student body is more concentrated in "top universities", with the top five all being research-intensive institutions.


Stanford University and UC Berkeley together account for over 45% of Apple's silicon engineering team, making them the core talent source for Apple's team. Both universities are located in the Bay Area, offering convenient commutes to Apple's headquarters, and providing a natural advantage for student internships and campus recruitment.


Georgia Institute of Technology has unique advantages in packaging and manufacturing, and Apple's self-developed chipsrely heavily on advanced packaging (such as UltraFusion technology) , making Georgia Tech graduates a perfect fit.


04 Qualcomm


Qualcomm is one of the world's largest mobile chip design companies, headquartered in San Diego, California. Most flagship Android phones now use its Snapdragon processors.

In recent years, Qualcomm's focus has expanded from mobile phones to automobiles (such as Snapdragon smart cockpits), the Internet of Things, and AI inference chips.


Qualcomm has approximately 55,000 employees worldwide, with 19,000 in the United States, of which about 11,000 are engineers.


The University of California, San Diego (UCSD) ranks first by a wide margin with 626 students—Qualcomm's headquarters are located in San Diego, and UCSD, as a school right on its doorstep, enjoys a significant geographical advantage.


Interestingly, the University of Southern California ranked second with 374 students, more than many UC schools.


USC's Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) program is widely recognized as top-tier in the industry and is a flagship program of the USC Viterbi School of Engineering. This aligns perfectly with Qualcomm's need for specialized talent.


Texas schools have collectively disappeared here. After all, Qualcomm's industrial focus is in San Diego, California, and it's much more difficult for Texas students to get into Qualcomm than for California students.


03 Intel


Intel is headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It is the world's third-largest semiconductor manufacturer and has long been a leader in PC and server CPUs.

In March 2025, after taking office as the new CEO, Chen Liwu began a major transformation: on the one hand, revitalizing its own manufacturing business, and on the other hand, betting on AI PCs.


Intel is also the only one of the five companies to have its own wafer fab. It has approximately 109,000 employees worldwide, with about 50,000 in the United States.


Intel's structure is completely different from the other four companies—its Top 5 are all public state universities, such as Arizona State University and Oregon State University.


The reason is simple: Intel has a large number of manufacturing plants in Arizona and Oregon , which require a large number of engineers, many of whom are not chip design personnel.


If you only look at design jobs in California and Texas, the data is completely different:


Data from design positions better reflects "chip design capabilities," with San Jose State University and the University of Southern California regaining their leading positions.


02 AMD


AMD is the world's second-largest PC CPU manufacturer, headquartered in Santa Clara, California. It has made rapid progress in data center GPUs in recent years and is gradually challenging Nvidia's market share.

AMD's approach is quite interesting. Instead of direct competition, it relies on a "small investment, big return" strategy, using a more open ecosystem to attract developers and PC brand manufacturers.


The company has approximately 31,000 employees worldwide, including 19,000 in the United States, with about 8,400 engineers.


The University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M University occupy the top two spots—both are top-performing public universities in Texas. This demonstrates the strong appeal of Texas students to AMD, making them a crucial source of recent graduates.

The University of Southern California ranked fourth, while UC Berkeley didn't even crack the top five. In AMD's case, Berkeley is actually inferior to San Jose State University. This is completely different from Nvidia's situation.


01 Nvidia


NVIDIA is the global leader in GPUs and AI chips. Its greatest strengths lie in two areas: the CUDA ecosystem and the Hopper and Blackwell generations of data center GPUs. With these, NVIDIA essentially holds a monopoly in the AI ​​training and inference market.

The company has approximately 42,000 employees worldwide, with 24,000 in the United States, including 14,000 engineers—a rather staggering proportion.

  • Public schools are better than private schools.


Schools like ASU, SJSU, UCSD, and UT Austin far surpass many higher-ranked private schools in semiconductor employment data. Public school curricula are more aligned with industry needs, their alumni networks are more localized, and their tuition is cheaper.


  • Choosing courses is just as important as choosing a major.


Don't just look at the name of your major; what truly determines whether you can get into a major chip company is the courses you've actually taken.


For example, the reason why USC's VLSI program is so competitive is because its curriculum is closely aligned with industry needs , and the interviews allow for in-depth discussions about the details of the project.

Conversely, some prestigious university courses are too theoretical, and students may not even be familiar with SPICE (School of Science and Technology), making them less effective than a state university with a "hardcore" curriculum .
