The Rise of AI + X Degrees: How Top Universities Are Redesigning Undergraduate Education

AI + X

McKinsey projected in 2024 that 50% of current jobs could be displaced by AI by 2030. Whether or not that specific figure proves accurate, the directional pressure it reflects has already started reshaping how universities design undergraduate programs. From elite engineering schools to Ivy League universities to top-30 comprehensive institutions, the pace of new AI-related degree programs has accelerated dramatically, with many schools adding or restructuring programs on an almost annual basis.

Two forces are driving this simultaneously. The first is the job market: demand for graduates who can combine genuine AI fluency with deep domain knowledge in a specific field has exploded. The second is the admissions side: universities are using these new programs to attract a different kind of student, one with technical foundations who can also apply those tools to real problems in specific fields.

AI + X Is Not a Double Major

AI + X

It is worth being precise about what these programs actually are, because the "AI + X" framing can be misleading. These are not traditional major-plus-minor arrangements where two disciplines happen to coexist on the same transcript. They are programs built from the ground up to embed AI tools and reasoning into the core methodology of another discipline. The AI is not an add-on: it is the lens through which the second field is studied and applied.

From a career perspective, AI + X graduates tend to have two strong paths available. The first is directly into AI development, algorithm engineering, and technical roles. The second is into established industries like finance, consulting, healthcare, and policy, where the ability to apply AI creates advantages that traditional practitioners in those fields cannot easily replicate. This second path deserves particular attention: no matter how fast AI capabilities evolve, genuine understanding of an industry's specific problems remains something that algorithms cannot fully substitute.

Here is a look at some of the most notable programs currently available.

MIT: Artificial Intelligence and Decision Making

MIT offers a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Decision Making, a genuinely interdisciplinary program that combines AI with the humanities, arts, and social sciences. The program aims to develop future leaders who can not only build and deploy AI systems but understand them in their broader social and ethical context.

Course requirements include introductory programming and computer science, advanced work in representation, inference, and AI reasoning, dynamical systems and control design, AI and decision-making in society, and ethics of computing. The humanities and social science requirements are taken seriously and are comparable in weight to the technical coursework. Laboratory experience is also required.

The curriculum draws from computer science, mathematics, statistics, and economics, with explicit orientation toward roles in technology, finance, consulting, and public policy. What distinguishes this program from a standard CS degree is the institutional insistence that technical capability and humanistic judgment are both necessary and must be developed together.

USC: Business and Artificial Intelligence

USC's Bachelor of Science in Business and Artificial Intelligence is jointly offered by the Marshall School of Business and the Viterbi School of Engineering, making it genuinely cross-institutional rather than a program housed in one school with electives borrowed from another.

Coursework covers communication strategy in business, statistics and data science for business contexts, AI principles and foundations, hands-on AI applications for business problems, and AI technology strategic management. The program is designed to produce graduates who have both the technical depth to understand and deploy AI systems and the business acumen to identify where those systems create value, open new markets, or transform existing operations.

CMU: AI as an Additional Major for All Students

Carnegie Mellon has been the most influential institution in AI education for decades, having launched one of the first dedicated undergraduate AI programs in the country in 2018. What is distinctive about CMU's current structure is that it offers AI as an additional major that any undergraduate can pursue alongside their primary field of study, whether that is engineering, humanities, business, or the sciences.

The additional major includes rigorous requirements in advanced mathematics, core AI and machine learning coursework, deep learning systems, cognitive robotics, and human-AI interaction. CMU is explicit that this is not a lightweight program: the mathematical and computational demands are comparable to or exceed those of a standard computer science major at most universities. Students who complete it emerge with credentials in both their primary discipline and in AI that are independently credible.

HKU: AI and Data Science Within the Faculty of Arts and Engineering

The University of Hong Kong offers an AI and Data Science program under its dual Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Engineering structure. The program integrates quantitative and computational skills from engineering with the critical analysis and reflective inquiry developed in the humanities.

Course topics include foundations of AI and humanity, modeling and benchmarking, ethics, society, and law of artificial intelligence, advanced topics in AI and humanity, and a research project in AI and humanity. The program is explicit that students will not only gain the technical knowledge to apply AI but will also engage seriously with its ethical dimensions and social responsibilities, developing the ability to deploy this technology in ways that are principled and accountable.

PolyU: AI and FinTech

Hong Kong Polytechnic University offers an AI and Financial Technology program that combines AI fundamentals with deep finance training. Students can graduate with one of three degrees depending on their track: a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence, a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Financial Technology, or a Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Analytics.

The AI and FinTech track is designed for students who want to work at the intersection of algorithmic systems and financial markets. Career paths it targets include financial advisory, AI consulting, financial data analysis, fintech systems development, and entrepreneurship in the financial technology space.

What to Think About Before Choosing an AI + X Program

The difficulty is comparable to pure CS. AI + X programs uniformly require strong mathematical foundations, programming skills, and algorithmic thinking. Some, like CMU's additional major, are harder than standard computer science at many universities. Students and families should assess readiness honestly and not assume that "interdisciplinary" means lower technical demands.

The depth of X matters as much as the AI component. The most competitive graduates of these programs are the ones who have genuine expert-level knowledge of their second domain and can use AI to solve real problems within it. Students who treat X as a superficial set of electives will find themselves outcompeted by both pure AI graduates and pure X-domain specialists. The value is in the combination, and the combination requires real depth in both directions.

Track record matters more than the name of the program. Universities have been adding AI-labeled programs quickly enough that some are more substance than marketing and some are more marketing than substance. When evaluating programs, the most reliable signals are how long the program has existed, how deep the cross-school collaboration actually goes, and what the school's existing relationships with industry look like. USC's joint Marshall-Viterbi structure and CMU's decades of AI research investment are meaningfully different from a newly branded program with AI in the title but little institutional history behind it.
