Computer Science BS vs. BA: Which Degree Is Right for You?

When students decide to study computer science, most assume there is only one path: the Bachelor of Science. But many universities offer both a BS and a BA in computer science, and the choice between them is more consequential than most families realize. It affects what you study, how much math you take, how you spend your elective credits, and in some cases, how employers and graduate programs perceive your degree. Understanding the real differences between these two tracks is worth doing carefully before committing.
The Core Distinction: Computer Science BS vs. BA
The fundamental difference of a computer science BS and a BA comes down to depth versus breadth. A BS in Computer Science is a technical degree built around rigorous mathematical and scientific foundations. A BA in Computer Science is designed for students who want computational skills alongside a broader liberal arts education, often combining CS with another field like linguistics, cognitive science, economics, or design.
Neither is inherently better. But they are genuinely different degrees, and choosing the wrong one for your goals can mean spending time and money on coursework that doesn't serve you well, or missing out on courses that would have.

Curriculum Differences
The BS curriculum is mathematically intensive. In addition to core programming and systems courses, BS students typically complete calculus through multivariable calculus or beyond, linear algebra, discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, and often differential equations. The upper-division coursework tends to go deeper into theory: algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, programming language theory, and advanced topics like machine learning, compilers, or distributed systems. Students are expected to engage with computer science as a rigorous engineering discipline.
The BA curriculum covers the same foundational programming and CS concepts but usually requires fewer mathematics courses and fewer upper-division technical electives. In exchange, students have significantly more room for coursework outside the department. This is intentional. The BA is structured for students who see computing as one important tool in a broader intellectual or professional toolkit rather than the central focus of their degree.
At some universities the overlap between the two degrees is substantial, with only a handful of courses separating them. At others the differences are more dramatic. It is worth looking at the specific requirements at each school you are considering rather than assuming the labels mean the same thing everywhere.
Mathematical Depth and What It Signals
This is the part of the conversation families often underestimate. Mathematics is not just a prerequisite in a CS degree; it is one of the things employers and graduate programs are actually looking for when they look at a transcript. Courses like linear algebra, probability theory, and algorithm analysis show up directly in technical interviews, machine learning roles, quantitative finance positions, and graduate-level research. A BS transcript signals that a student has been through that mathematical gauntlet. A BA transcript may or may not, depending on the school.
This does not mean BA graduates are less capable. Many BA students supplement their requirements with additional math courses voluntarily, and some BA programs are rigorous enough to compete with BS programs at other schools. But if you are considering roles that involve heavy quantitative work, or if graduate school in CS or a related field is a possibility, the BS is generally the safer and stronger signal.
Admissions Considerations
At many universities, the BS and BA in CS are housed in different schools within the institution, and this matters for admissions. The BS is often in an engineering school, while the BA may be in a college of arts and sciences or liberal arts. Engineering schools at selective universities frequently have lower acceptance rates than the college of arts and sciences at the same institution, sometimes significantly so. A student applying to a highly selective university as a CS BS applicant in the engineering school may face steeper odds than the same student applying for a CS BA in the liberal arts college, even though they are applying to the same university.
Families should research this carefully. At some schools the two degrees are in the same college and the admissions process is identical. At others they are entirely separate applications with different pools and different acceptance rates.
Career Outcomes
For most industry roles in software engineering, product management, and data science, a BS and a BA from a reputable program will open the same doors. Employers hiring at the undergraduate level care most about demonstrated skills, internship experience, and technical interview performance. A strong BA graduate who has done meaningful internships and can perform well in a coding interview will compete effectively against BS graduates.
The gap widens in a few specific contexts. Roles in machine learning research, quantitative trading, computational biology, or systems engineering often have implicit or explicit expectations of deeper mathematical and theoretical preparation. Graduate programs in computer science, particularly research-focused PhD programs, will look closely at mathematical coursework, and a BS with strong math preparation is generally a more competitive foundation.
The BA has its own career advantages that are underappreciated. Students who combine CS with economics, psychology, linguistics, or design often find themselves well-positioned for product roles, UX research, technology policy, and interdisciplinary fields where the ability to bridge technical and non-technical worlds is genuinely valuable. A CS and economics combination, for example, is a common and effective path into fintech, consulting, and economic research.

Which One Should You Choose?
If you love mathematics, want to go deep into computer science theory, are considering graduate school, or are aiming for highly technical roles, the BS is the right choice. Push yourself into the harder degree and take full advantage of what it offers.
If you have a strong secondary interest in another field, see computing as a powerful complement to that interest rather than an end in itself, or simply want more flexibility in how you structure your undergraduate education, the BA can be an excellent and strategically smart choice. The key is to be intentional about it, treating the additional elective space as an opportunity to build something distinctive rather than simply a lighter workload.
The worst outcome is choosing a degree for the wrong reasons: picking the BA because it seems easier without thinking about where you are headed, or defaulting to the BS because it sounds more impressive without genuinely engaging with the mathematical demands it carries. Both degrees can produce outstanding outcomes. The difference is in knowing whether a computer science BS or a BA aligns with your actual goals.
