While not as well-known as QS or U.S. News, CWUR's strength lies in its scope—by evaluating over 20,000 universities worldwide and selecting the top-performing 2,000 each year, it has genuinely earned the title of the "world's largest" ranking.

Worth noting: Center for World University Rankings is the only global academic ranking that evaluates education quality, alumni employment, faculty quality, and research performance without relying on surveys or data submitted by universities themselves.

Let's take a look at what's changed in this year's rankings.

How are universities around the world performing in the Center for World University Rankings?

Let's start with the Top 10.

I'll be honest—for a moment I thought I was seeing things, because this year's ranking is identical to last year's.

Harvard University once again ranks #1 globally, marking 15 consecutive years at the top.

Right behind it, as usual, are MIT and Stanford; Cambridge and Oxford represent the UK as the #4 and #5 spots.

US universities

Among the Top 100, US universities demonstrate overwhelming, absolute dominance—whether at the very top of the pyramid or in sheer numbers within the top 100, American institutions hold an unshakeable lead.

Harvard, MIT, and Stanford sweep the global top three, and the US claims 8 of the top 10 spots overall.

Widening the lens to the Top 20, the US share rises further to 75%: Caltech (#11), UC Berkeley (#12), Cornell (#14), Northwestern (#15), University of Michigan–Ann Arbor (#16), UCLA (#17), and Johns Hopkins (#18) all turned in strong performances.

However, not everyone has a reason to smile.

Ivy League member Dartmouth managed to claw back some points thanks to a #19 ranking in alumni employment, but its heavy emphasis on undergraduate education left its research strength ranking at just #314—a significant drag that ultimately placed it at #47 overall.

Neighboring Brown fared even worse, dropping outside the top 70 entirely. A look at its sub-scores reveals a research strength ranking of only #161—a serious disadvantage on a ranking that prioritizes hardcore global research output.

Vanderbilt, ranked #17 by U.S. News, comes in at only #56 on CWUR—trailing behind UIUC and Ohio State.

CMU, an undisputed powerhouse in computer science, barely squeezed into the top 100 at all (#94)—again held back by limited overall research volume and a narrow disciplinary footprint.

Georgetown, Emory, and Rice—all U.S. News Top 30 players—fell straight out of the top 200 altogether...

UK universities

The performance of UK universities can be summed up in one phrase: extremely strong at the top, but with notable unevenness elsewhere.

While the UK (8 schools in the top 100) can't match the sheer scale of the US (47 schools), British universities excel in cutting-edge academic capability.

Beyond Oxford and Cambridge, UCL (#19) and Imperial College London (#27) are solidly anchored in the top 30, with academic reputation and international standing remaining beyond reproach.

KCL (#44), the University of Edinburgh (#50), and the University of Manchester (#53) also turned in solid performances.

Australian universities

In our general impression, the University of Melbourne or the University of Sydney has long monopolized the top spot in Australia.

However, in the CWUR 2026 rankings, UNSW (University of New South Wales) has overturned both of them, claiming the #1 spot in Australia.

Looking at the sub-scores, UNSW's strength lies in being exceptionally well-rounded across both sciences and humanities.

Its research strength ranks #50 globally, and its alumni employment ranking held strong at #124 globally—opening up a clear gap with other Australian universities. By comparison, the University of Melbourne's alumni employment ranking sits at only #416, and the University of Sydney's has fallen all the way to #601.

Is this ranking "watered down"?

To know whether a ranking is "watered down," you need to understand how it's calculated.

The CWUR ranking emphasizes a university's education quality, employability, faculty, and research capability—and this is reflected directly in its scoring criteria:

Education (25%): the academic achievements of alumni, including the number and proportion of alumni receiving major academic awards
Employability (25%): the number and proportion of alumni holding senior positions at major global companies
Faculty (10%): the number of faculty members who have received major academic awards
Research (10% each across four sub-metrics):
Total number of research papers
High-quality publications
Influence
Number of highly-cited papers

Alumni academic achievement and alumni employability together account for half of the total weighting—which can offer extra value as a reference point for students who prioritize their future career development.
