Attention Fall 2027 applicants!
The University of Florida has announced that, starting with the 2026-27 application season, it will introduce an Early Decision (ED) round for the first time.
Application period begins: August 1st
Deadline: October 15th
Results will be released on December 11th.
In other words, UF will offer three application rounds this year:
Early Decision (ED): Deadline October 15th
Early Action (EA): Deadline November 1st
Regular Decision (RD): Deadline January 15th

01 It's rare for a public university to offer Early Decision (ED)!
There's another particularly noteworthy point about UF's Early Decision (ED) this time—it's an ED offered by a public university.
It's important to know that the vast majority of public universities that offer early application programs choose Early Action (EA). This is because public universities are funded by state governments and typically need to prioritize and cater to in-state students, and they don't want to restrict students' financial choices with binding agreements.
Of the top 60 universities, only four public universities, including UF, offer Early Decision (ED).
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

UMich is one of the very few public universities in the United States that ranks among the top ten in the nation for business, engineering, and computer science. Its campus culture is extremely diverse and imbued with a passionate athletic spirit.
In the past, when only Early Action (EA) was available, UMich was undoubtedly an application magnet, with over 95,000 applications received annually and an overall acceptance rate of around 18%.
Because its Early Action (EA) round is extremely selective for out-of-state and international students, it issues a large number of deferrals every year, resulting in an actual direct acceptance rate of less than 15% in previous years. After the Early Decision (ED) round was added in 2006, the number of applicants reached a record 115,125, with nearly two-thirds of applicants choosing to apply early.
The key application milestones for UMich this year are as follows 👇
ED round
Application deadline: November 1st
Results release time: Before the end of December
Enrollment deposit deadline: January 6th of the following year
EA round
Application deadline: November 1st
Results announcement time: Before the end of January of the following year
Response deadline: May 1st of the following year
RD rounds
Application deadline: February 1st
Results announcement time: Before early April of the following year
Response deadline: May 1st of the following year
University of Virginia

UVA is a pioneer in opening Early Decision (ED) rounds among top public universities.
According to recent data, UVA receives approximately 56,000 applications in total, with the early application round accounting for nearly 50% to 60% of the available spots. Furthermore, the acceptance rate for the Early Decision (ED) round is typically as high as 24%-30% , while the acceptance rate for the subsequent Early Action (EA) round often plummets to around 12%.
Because UVA has a strict 2/3 quota protection policy for in-state students, international students who consider UVA as their first choice will have a higher chance of being admitted through Early Decision.

EA round

RD rounds

College of William and Mary

W&M receives a relatively small number of applications, around 11,000, but its overall acceptance rate is around 33%. It is the only one of the four public schools to offer both Early Decision 1 and Early Decision 2 rounds.
Moreover, W&M completed more than 40% of its enrollment target in the Early Decision (ED) phase, with an ED acceptance rate as high as 45%-50%, which is nearly twice the RD acceptance rate.
Because it perfectly combines the cost-effectiveness of public school tuition with the elite experience of private school, W&M's ED2 often becomes one of the choices for top students who are rejected by other schools' ED in mid-December.
ED1 round

Deadline for school admission deposit: January 5th of the following year
ED2 round

02 Universities' tricks for recruiting students
On its official website, UF explained that it launched its Early Decision (ED) round in order to catch up with its peers.

The fact that public universities are opening Early Decision (ED) programs reveals their ambition to join the "talent war."
In previous years, only the non-binding Early Action (EA) round was available, making top public universities like UF and UMich easy backup options for applicants. Many people, even after receiving offers, ultimately went to other schools.
With Early Decision (ED), these public universities can lock in high-quality students early on and boost their enrollment rates.
For applicants, in the past, many children from middle-class families had no choice during the Early Decision (ED) stage and had to enroll in a private university with an annual tuition of nearly $100,000.
Now, you can definitely choose a top-tier public university with more affordable tuition, top-ranked programs, and a large alumni network.

Public schools are actively entering the market, and private schools are not idle either.
Washington University in St. Louis has opened its Early Action (EA) round, allowing more applicants who are interested in WashU but are afraid of being locked out too early to put their concerns aside and apply actively.
Rice University added ED2to provide an additional opportunity to accept high-quality applicants who have just emerged from the ED1/REA battleground of top Ivy League schools.
The University of Chicago, already offering a rich selection of early application rounds (EA, ED1, ED2), pioneered "ED0." Applications open in early September and close in mid-October, with results available within three weeks of submission. This allows them to secure their top applicants from summer programs well before the November 1st rush for early applications.
Northeastern University is even more practical. Last application season, it not only waived the application fees for the ED1 and ED2 rounds, but also provided each ED-admitted student with a $5,000 overseas study credit, as well as a series of benefits such as more convenient financial aid policies.

Whether it's a public or private university, focusing on early application will lead to a common result: fewer and fewer spots will be available for Regular Decision (RD).
If you plan to forgo early application and only bet on RD, then what awaits you is likely to be an extremely fierce RD battle.
Therefore, I still recommend that everyone plan their ED1, ED2, and EA application rounds scientifically, especially seizing the good opportunity of EA which is not tied to the application process and allows for early admission, and locking in the golden period of early application.
As many of you may have noticed, the application deadline for UF ED is October 15th, which is even half a month earlier than the usual early application deadline.
This requires you to move your application timeline forward. Whoever does more during the summer will secure the first ticket to the early application battle.
